Yamaei Keori

Yamaei Keori

Limitless possibilities, interwoven through the passage of time

Nestled serenely alongside the Nikko river in Tsushima, Aichi Prefecture lies Yamaei Keori, a hidden gem just a short 25 minutes drive from Nagoya station. Established in 1915, this mill has upheld a rich legacy of crafting exquisite textiles, with a primary focus on menswear fabrics.

Mr. Yamada, the fourth-generation CEO of this establishment, graciously welcomed us into his office—a veritable treasure trove brimming with historical archives dating back to the early 20th century. Quietly arranged within were volumes of weaving blueprints, old yarn samples, and an extensive library of ingeniously designed fabric swatches. Yamaei Keori's reputation for quality has spread throughout the fashion world, attracting the attention of numerous European luxury houses seeking to collaborate on original fabric collections.

Venturing further, we explored the main factory, home to vintage looms that have faithfully woven some of Japan's finest textiles for generations. Even from outside, the rhythmic sound of the machines evokes a sense of nostalgia, reminiscent of the steady heartbeat of a living being. Rather than racing against time for efficiency, these looms operate at a slower pace, allowing each yarn space to breathe and maintain its natural form, resulting in fabrics with an impression imbued with depth and vitality.

The commitment to this artistic pursuit transcends mere logic and technology. Yamaei Keori's sensibilities are finely attuned to the subtle shifts of nature. For instance, it is said that the nearby river provides an advantage during winter by moderating humidity and reducing friction during weaving, keeping the yarns’ luster when woven together.

The weavers within these walls are true artisans, many dedicating their lives to perfecting their work. Despite their advanced years, their passion for the weaving process is palpable. Some spoke about each weaving process passionately, with radiant faces reminiscent of a child discussing their favorite toy. And among them are younger individuals, drawn to the tradition by a shared love for fashion and a desire to contribute to Yamaei Keori's legacy.

Every individual involved in this endeavor shares a deep belief in their craft, refusing to compromise on quality, keeping a thoughtful approach to production. In a world that grows ever faster and more demanding, they remain steadfast in their commitment to excellence, imparting a sense of warmth and kindness to every piece they create.

Each piece of fabric represents a human story, woven patiently through time, connecting people, technology, and nature in a tapestry of innovation and tradition.
